You’ve finally decided to move to a new city, however, you have a lot of stuff and can’t move them all at once. What will you do? The best thing to do is rent a self storage space where you can store some of your stuff. But before you choose a self storage facility, you need to ask them a couple of questions to make sure that your stuff will be safe. Some of the questions to ask include;
1. Is there an on-site manager?
If you have questions or concerns, it can be helpful to have someone available to talk to instead of having to call into a call center.
2. Is the area gated? How do customers access the area?
If you will be storing valuables, you want to make sure they are secure. If the area is gated, is there a security code to enter and exit or is there an individual who must be present to grant access?
3. What type of security is offered?
You should always supply your own padlock to secure your unit, but does the facility provide additional security such as cameras and alarms?
4. Have the units been tested for leaks?
While every situation can’t be planned for, storage units should be prevented from leaks due to heavy rainfall and other natural events.
5. How are pests prevented?
While facility workers can’t go into other units to clean up, what measures are taken to ensure that food or other items that may attract pests aren’t stored on-site? Is the area sprayed for pests?
6. Is it temperature controlled?
Not everyone will need this feature, but if you’re storing delicate items or treasured photos, you’ll want them to remain at a fairly constant temperature and to be protected from extreme heat or freezing.
7. What is the full rental fee? Can you lock in that rate?
Many places offer a move-in special with discounted rates for the first month or first few months. You’ll want to know what the full rental amount is and whether you can lock in that rate or if it’s subject to change in the future.
8. Are there additional charges in addition to the monthly rent?
You’ll want to know ahead of time if there are any deposits, move-in fees, or other add-ons to the monthly rent.
9. Does the rental fee include insurance?
Most homeowners and renter’s insurance policies cover items located in self storage facilities, but it’s good to know what additional coverage you may have.
10. What sizes are offered?
You don’t want to waste money renting more space than you need. Take a look at all the different sizes offered and plan to stack any items to save space. For example, place boxes on top of dressers and fill the drawers with smaller items to save space.
