Buying your first boat and thinking about all the ways you’re going to enjoy it can make it seem like a very exciting prospect, but you also need to take into account some of the more practical considerations, such as where you’re planning to store it when not in use. Whether you’re preparing for winter, or just a long period of inactivity, unless you already have the ideal space on your property for storing your boat, self storage in Toronto is probably the safest choice. With that in mind, we’re going to list some of the best tips for storing your boat.
1. Take your boat out one last time
It’s recommended that before you store your boat, you should take it out on the water to check for any issues that may need fixing later, such as repairs or maintenance. Making note of these things now means you’ll have plenty of time to get any repairs done in the coming months, so you’ll be ready the next time you want to get out there. Be especially on the lookout for any hull damage, which can worsen in storage.
2. Check the supports
Whatever you decide to use a trailer, jack stands, blocks or a custom cradle, ensure your boat will be properly supported when you are putting it in a self-storage. Your boat’s engine, keel and bulkheads should be adequately supported at all times.
3. Scrub out
Remove the bilge drain and give your boat a proper scrubbing to get rid of any dirt, grime, barnacles and food crumbs. Take the time to clean out the interior, and leave plenty of time for the outside to dry.
4. Flush out the cooling system
Flushing out your boat’s cooling system will get rid of any dirt, salt and grime and any other unwanted stuff that can lead to corrosion if left to linger. Depending on the climate (say if you’re storing in winter), you may also want to add some antifreeze to the cooling system to protect it from damage.
5. Change oils and filters
Ensure you don’t forget to change your boat’s oils and filters; also think about adding a fuel stabilizing additive if you’re going to be storing for a long period of time.
6. Engine safety
If you add a fuel stabilizer, let your engine run for 15 minutes to allow the additives to reach the fuel in the lines and engine.
7. Remove electronics
This includes your battery. Store them somewhere safe, warm and dry. Clean and grease the battery terminals.
8. Clean out the head
Pump some antifreeze through the y-valve, intake line, discharge hose and macerator.
9. Shrink wrap or plastic tarp
Whichever you use, ensure your boat is properly covered.
10. Check on your boat
No matter how secure your self storage in Toronto may be, you should always check on your boat every few weeks to ensure it’s safe and in the condition you left it in.
